A visual pedometer for people who spend to much time at their desk
SLITHER is a desk accessory that acts as a visual pedometer, tracking your daily steps. Instead of relying on an apple watch or another wearable device SLITHER uses the Fitbit app on your smartphone to track your steps. As your steps increase SLITHER will light up from front to back until your weekly 50,000 step goal is achieved and the reset. SLITHER has a magnetic on/off switch. A magnet are hidden in SLITHER's cylindrical tail shape. When SLITHER is not in use, the cylinder can be placed elsewhere on your desk and slither will remain off.
WHY
Nowadays pedometers are often wearable like an Apple watch and Fitbit tracker. Not everyone enjoys wearing tech and enjoy more subtle reminders than a phone or watch notification. It’s intended for people that struggle with getting daily activity in and spend all their time at their desk.
HOW IT WORKS
SLITHER was developed to remain off unless its magnetic switch is close to the device, leaving it up to the user to decide when it’s on. The device connects to wifi through an Arduino Feather Huzzah board. Using custom code it tracks up to 50,000 steps. Once the goal is met the device resets.
FORM
SLITHER is intentionally a modern take on a the form of a snake since we associate this animal with a type of movement. It was designed to look different from anything else on your desk and stand out.
PROCESS
The SLITHER prototype involved CNCing wood boards, laster cutting acrylic, and a bit of Arduino coding that connected with a users FitBit app.
